Annual Letter, Neergaard and van der Werff Families, December 2017
Lois and Dick

Lois thrives, pacing herself nicely between quilting, naps, tea, tennis (when we can) and enjoying excitement served up on TV.   As for me, I "run good" (kinda) in spite of several dented fenders.

As in previous winters, we'll soon set out for Hilton Head, where our accustomed daily tennis will, alas, this year be diminished.  Our "Hilton Head Family" of many years has sadly thinned out (nor is this here ol' grey mare what I used to be, athletics-wise).  Life is nevertheless full of little triumphs:  finding misplaced keys, passing my driver license vision test (a biggie!), going to watch streamed Met Opera and Bolshoi performances on the silver screen.  And I take pleasure in making an occasional small contribution to society by mashing-up greeting cards (with Photoshop) for friends and family.   These small indulgences do provide a satisfying outlet for creativity;  never mind that lots of effort is required to elicit only a moment of amusement.... it's worth it.  (Makes me think of The Little Drummer Boy -  maybe 'taint much but it's something I can do.)

All is well with the Van der Werff family.  Willem is working hard as a junior at St Louis University, studying mechanical engineering.   Nick is a sophomore at Miami University studying biology.  Sue and I now have our third place to live (after Cincinnati and Holland) in Longmont, CO.  My company has a second office in Colorado and we can combine our love for the National Parks with work there.  We are grateful season ticket holders to the Cincinnati Symphony, enjoying the marvelously remodeled Cincinnati Music Hall.  To keep in touch with friends and family we travel a few times a year to Holland.  On Sundays we enjoy family dinner together, with uncle Gramma, uncle Grampa, uncle Art and whatever other uncles join us for dinner.

My “retirement-job”, running ShootingSight (a small company I founded) of which Sue is Senior Vice President of HR and Customer Service, and Jan Willem, when he’s not CEO-ing, is packaging clerk and CFO), has been working out well.

I have always loved inventing, and tinkering to improve designs.  ShootingSight has given me the opportunity not only to invent and design, but also to manufacture and market my products:  equipment for the target-shooting market.

I've learned since retiring from P&G that you have to work way harder when you own your own company than if you work for a corporation, but that the work is way more rewarding.

From now on Richard has declared he'll be known as “Richard & Thi”.   He reports having one of the most enjoyable years of his life:

"Most of the year was spent in London going to art school, which formalized my new direction of becoming a serious artist.  Check out  my car-related art [<- CLICK], two pieces of which are now exhibited at the British Motor Museum, one sold via Bonhams in their Aston Martin auction, and others sold to car enthusiasts.  But I also paint, mainly abstract
[<- CLICK], and I’ve started selling those, too.

Towards the end of the year, I scooped up Thi, the love of my life, and headed off to Los Angeles to surf, enjoy the sun and make a lot more art.  For me, this represents paradise.

The biggest news is that on
December 23, Thi and I will marry in a small family ceremony in Cincinnati (providing another
celebration at Christmastime!).

As I goof around in the sun on my Harley and surfboard, my children Samer and Lila toil under heavy study burdens in the freezing cold of Boston where they are both at university, Samer in his junior year of engineering at Boston University, and Lila in her freshman year of business at Northeastern."

We both continue to work for IBM... at least for now.  Given new requirements to move to specific cities (and possibly different cities), we are looking at alternatives - some of which look rather interesting.  By this time next year, there may be some significant changes.  We're both very much looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

As for the kids, they are both doing very well.  Steven, in his Junior year of High School, is a trombonist in concert and marching bands (as well as honors and district bands).  He's a troop leader in Scouts and has nearly completed his Eagle Scout requirements.  He is also part of the National Honors Society and just generally very busy with school and life.

Alex keeps growing, despite my telling him not to.
He's doing very well in school and very much enjoys soccer.  He has really taken to piano, which he has been studying for a little more than a year. We are all looking forward to his next Christmas recital (video will be provided on request!).

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays
....and may the New Year prove to turn out even better than we expect.
