but as it begins to climb up the mesa face
toward its top, the "Island in the Sky",
it gets steeper and steeper, with its
switchbacks ever sharper and more
frequent.
There are no shoulders or guard rails.
The Colorado's a half mile down below.
Knuckles may turn white and stomachs
may well go queasy.
