The Basilica Cistern, built in the
6th century next to the Hagia Sophia, is the size of a cathedral
and is largest of several hundred such ancient underground reservoirs
that still lie beneath Istanbul.
It's supported by a forest of 336 columns,
the bases of two of which reuse earlier blocks carved with the head of
a Medusa.
