Backstory - the young hero is to be released from indenture (to The Pirates of Penzance) when he turns 21.  
But then, sadly for him (and his love life), it turns out that the wording of his contract specifies 
he's to be freed on his 21st birthday.  And alas..... he was born on February 29th.
