Musical Theme:  "The Green Leaves of Summer", from the film, "The Alamo", by Dimitri Tiomkin [click here for the lyrics]

Picture in your mind:  The defenders of the Alamo, facing the entire army of Santa Anna, are determined to hold the Mexicans back long enough to give Sam Houston's army time to arrive and get into position.  The Alamo's defenders know they'll certainly die and have sent away their women and children (except for
one wife who refuses to leave her man).

The music plays in the background as the Texans await the onslaught, then continues during the battle.  The contrast between the violence and the gentle, poignant music that informs it was, to me, enormously touching.

The Alamo defenders did indeed all die, but they fought long enough to give Sam Houston, though outnumbered, time to deploy, then defeat, Santa Anna in a surprise attack.  Thus the Republic of Texas was born.)

A time to be reapin', a time to be sowin'.
The green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.
'Twas so good to be young then, in a season of plenty,
When the catfish were jumpin' as high as the sky.

A time just for plantin', a time just for ploughin'.
A time to be courtin' a girl of your own.
'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,
And to stand by your wife at the moment of birth.

A time to be reapin', a time to be sowin'.
The green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.
'Twas so good to be young then, with the sweet smell of apples,
And the owl in the pine tree a-winkin' his eye.

A time just for plantin', a time just for ploughin'.
A time just for livin', a place for to die.
'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,
Now the green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.

'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,
Now the green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.
